Classics in the Walled Garden

Wednesday 1st July 2009

From 4pm

Hello All,

Having stood down as organiser of Classics on the Common, I’ve been tempted to do something else, on a similar vein! I’m still involved in and fully support Classics on the Common, this is an additional event, not a replacement or competition to it! Many of you will remember the early days of Classics on the Common when just a few hundred vehicles attended. I’m going back in time in more ways than one.

You are invited to join me at an evening picnic within the historic Walled Garden on the Luton Hoo Estate. I’m restricting entries, inside the Garden, to 350. I can’t fit coaches, buses and lorries etc. into the garden but they can still pre-book the few spaces immediately outside the wall. I intend to adopt a similar policy on acceptance to the policy I had applied on the Common. The event is aimed at cars and motorcycles aged 20 years and older, with more modern classics accepted at my discretion. The 350 tickets inside the Walled Garden will be issued on a first come first served basis. Vehicles will be parked as they arrive. There will be parking available, outside the Walled Garden on payment, on the night for spectators and classics which haven’t booked.

On the night we hope to have some music, a licensed bar, and some volunteers on hand to tell you more about the Garden. Subject to numbers some catering facilities may be available, I will update all entrants with an email nearer the time. I’m not planning to send out paper entries for this event so if you have friends without email who may be interested please pass this on to them.

Luton Hoo Walled Garden is set in a beautiful estate with entry from the New Mill End Road along a lovely tree lined drive. You can read some of it’s history at; www.lutonhooestate.co.uk. The estate wants to encourage more events on its land so any club who might be interested, please feel free to get in touch. Please note there is NO entry to the Walled Garden from the main entrance to the hotel & golf club on the A1081. An access map can be found on the website. Access to the estate is gated and will be closed during the day. There will be NO ENTRY to the estate before 4pm.

Proceeds from the event will be divided between The Walled Garden Project and Help for Heroes.

Please remember that Classics on the Common grew over 15 years and I grew with it, this is a new event in a new venue, I don’t expect to get everything right. Hopefully it will be an enjoyable evening in good company, and if it doesn’t all go perfectly that will add to it’s charm!

Tibbles Tour Sunday 28th June; This year’s event is being organised by John Tarbox. If you normally enter you will receive an entry form in due course, if you would like to be added to that mailing let me know. The format for the day is generally along the lines of; breakfast & briefing at the Holiday Inn Luton South, 110 (ish) miles tulip style route with a couple of places of interest and a fish and chip supper at the Carpenters Arms.

SUNDAY 12th
All day rally at Forde Abbey near Chard from 10 a.m.

The Abbey lies four miles south east of Chard and is sign posted from the A30 and the A358. The rally site is in the gardens, directly facing the house, and there will be the usual self judged pride of ownership competition.

The Abbey is the home of the Roper family, which was originally a Monastery founded over 800 years ago, but in 1649 it was transformed into the magnificent house you see today, set in 30 acres of world famous gardens. Facilities include a garden fun trail for children, a plant centre, the famous Eeles Pottery exhibition, a gift shop, and the licenced restaurant and tea room situated in the 12th Century Undercroft where you can enjoy home made light lunches and cream teas using produce from the estate. You can see more by visiting the Abbey website www.fordeabbey.co.uk.

For those booking in advance the rally entry fee for the car and driver is £10, rising to £12 for those who book in on the day. This gives the driver full access to the house and grounds. Adult passengers in the car pay £6.90 per head which gives full access to the house and grounds. Children aged 14 and under have free admission to the house and grounds.

We hope that as many Rover owners as possible, whether living in the south west or elsewhere, will wish to attend the rally.

CLASSICS ON THE COMMON
Harpenden
WEDNESDAY 29th JULY 2009

Dear Fellow Classic Vehicle Enthusiast,
We are delighted to confirm the date for this year’s Classics on the Common and to invite you to apply for a ticket to attend.
The Harpenden Village Rotary Club are honoured to be taking over the responsibility for running this event from Peter Madden and are also pleased to confirm that several individual members of the Carpenters Arms Classic Car Club have agreed to continue to support and help with the organisation of this event. Peter has also kindly agreed to continue to support the new organising committee.

Peter Madden
Peter, in conjunction with the Carpenters Arms Classic Car Club has been organising Classics on the Common since 1994 to wide acclaim from classic car enthusiasts. There continues to be extensive media interest in Classics on the Common. A film company for Meguiars were present last year making a film for the their Award Ceremony held at Gaydon in November when Peter received the Car Enthusiast of the Year 2008 Award. You should be able see this award later in the year on www.carcrazycentral.com

Charity
The tremendous sum of £8,500 was raised last year thanks to the generosity of classic vehicle entrants and the public. The aim is to raise a similar amount in 2009 and we shall be supporting the following specific charities and other good causes supported by Rotary:
• Hertfordshire Multiple Sclerosis Therapy Centre
• Grove House Hospice
The Harpenden Village Rotary Registered Charity Number is: 1032626

2009 Application
If you would like to join us this year and your vehicle is 20 years old or more please complete the priority ticket application attached and forward with an SAE and a cheque for £5 made payable to ‘HVRC’. In 2008 we had over 1,300 entries and due to pressure of space we have to limit this to 1,200 in 2009.

The classicsonthecommon.com website will be updated shortly.

Motorcycles and Scooters
Traditionally, motorcycles and scooters have parked on the common in an area referred to as the Baa Lambs. The police have insisted that for safety reasons this area should be fenced to prevent two-wheel vehicles getting onto the common over the kerb and pavement. This year all two-wheel vehicles will have to enter via the main arena entrance opposite the Silver Cup public house and from there will be directed to the Baa Lambs area. In 2009 only, a concessionary minimum entrance fee of £3 will be applied to two-wheel vehicles.

BRITISH CAR ENTHUSIASTS

We wish to thank all those who have offered assistance with various aspects of the show for 2009 and hope we will be able to take you up on those offers with a bigger and better return in 2010. Planning for 2010 should start later this year and further offers of help and ideas would be welcome (perhaps something for another thread).

We do still hope to have an informal day out at Wicksteed Park making use of the public parking and the parks general facilities on Sunday 6th September which would have been the date for this years event.

It would be nice to see as many as possible on that day, not just brit-cars people but from all groups who have attended previously, and we may even try to park in the area used for the rally provided there isn't another event taking place.
