Classics on the Common
2007 Report & 2008 Update

After the glorious weather of 2006 we once more had poor weather, although considering that many people across the country had flooded houses we were much better off than some. The poor weather meant that 2 days before the event we lost our spectator parking on the Common by Cravels Road. We were very grateful to the Rothamstead Experimental Station who allowed us to use their parking facilities after 6.30pm.

In 2006 we were able to donate a record £5,800 to local charities/good causes. In 2007 as a result of the poor weather, and increased expenses it dropped to £5,000 as follows;

New Jumbulance Travel Trust £2,000
Sir John Lawes School £2,000
Red Cross Harpenden £200
Herts Police Widows & Orphans £300
Rothamstead International £500

This figure still represents in excess of 100% of the standard entry fees, made possible by your generous donations above the standard entry fee and the other income we are able to generate to offset the event costs.

As always very many thanks to all of those who help, it wouldn’t be possible to organise without the support of those who help set up, steward, offer advice & support and all of you who attend and enjoy.

Since last years event, I’ve had a couple of meetings with the Town Council, we did end up paying for the hire of track matting, largely trying to find a more permanent solution to the ongoing problem of providing spectator parking. We are no closer to a permanent solution but similar arrangements to last year will be in place.

I was honoured by our friends at Classic & Sports Car magazine with a nomination for the Meguiars Car Enthusiast of the Year. I didn’t win but Lorraine and I had a lovely evening out!

Classics on the Common
Wednesday 30th July 2008

The date is now set for Wednesday 30th July and I am ready to start taking your entries, an entry form is included with this email. I’ve increased the entry fee to £5, I know many of you won’t mind as you already send that and more. For those who mind a bit, it will hopefully be the best £5 you spend all year! This years main beneficiaries will be Townsend School, St. Albans, Keech Cottage Hospice, and Trinity Hospice in Clapham South London. Many of you will know that I’ve generally supported local charities/good causes. I’m making an exception with Trinity Hospice, it’s my last year organising Classics on the Common, and I want to acknowledge the care that Trinity gave to my mum many years ago.

The website is currently off line, it will hopefully come back soon.

As in recent years we will not be allowing any entry on the night without a pre-booked entry pass. Last year it was a sell out about two weeks prior the event, and I had to turn people down who turned up at the house. So please don’t leave your entry too late. To try to avoid any confusion all vehicles who want to come onto the Common including scooters and motorbikes should have an entry pass. PLEASE DON’T FORGET TO INCLUDE A STAMPED ADDRESSED ENVELOPE with your entry form. At a peak I get and have to process 30-40 entries a day, and it makes it surprisingly more time consuming when I have to write out envelopes.

I’m pleased to announce that once again Harpenden Village Rotary Club will be assisting us with the event they very kindly get more and more involved each year to the point where we now couldn’t manage without them.

After 15 years this will be my last year as organiser. There is a team in place from Harpenden Rotary and the Carpenters Arms Classic Car Club who will be shadowing me this year to take over in 2009. More on the transition later in the year.

CLASSICS AT HARPENDEN
HIGHLAND GATHERING
SUNDAY 13TH JULY 2008

As part of this year’s Highland Gathering, the Harpenden Lions Club is once again inviting owners of classic cars to become part of the day’s attractions.

The Harpenden Highland Gathering is one of the largest gatherings outside Scotland. It attracts large crowds from Herts/Beds and Bucks with dancers, pipe bands, solo pipers, games participants and visitors from all over the UK. This is a Family Fun Day Out with a Scottish flavour. Now you have an opportunity to help add value to this major charity fund raising event.

Starting at 10.30 a.m. and finishing around 5.30 p.m. there is a full programme of activities throughout the day. Classic Cars will be parked in a special area inside Rothamsted Park, Harpenden. There is a £5 per car entrance fee to cover costs which include a special commemorative plate. This gives free entrance to the event for you and any passengers (worth £6 per head). Spaces are limited on a first come first served basis. To book your space complete the form and send it with your £5 fee (PO or cheque made payable to Harpenden Lions Club). Further details and joining instructions will be sent to you before the day.

Steam and Vintage Extravaganza

1, 2, 3rd August, 2008

The Steam and Vintage Extravaganza is a well established and very large event. It attracts 1000,s of visitors and is generally said to be "too much to take in in just 1 day".

As well as cars, motor bikes, coaches and military vehicles there is a steam fair, stalls and numerous other events. It is largely held on the runway and so, no muddy field syndrome.

A club area has been booked and will be taking the display stand. If you book through John Stacey, the Somerset Rep., then you get free entry and a place in the club reserved area. Being a huge site there is no real restriction on numbers PROVIDED the organisers are aware of the numbers expected on our club site.

More information on www.steamextravaganza.com

If you have already booked, just let John have your pass number and he will arrange for the stewards to flag you through to the club area.

NORTHAMPTON & DISTRICT ROVER CLUB ALL ROVER RALLY
2ND ATTEMPT
TUESDAY 2 SEPTEMBER

The Northampton and District Rover Club will be making a second attempt at holding their annual All Rover Rally on Tuesday 2 September 2008 at The Lilacs Public House, Isham, Nr Kettering, Northants. Our previous attempt in June this year was a complete wash out (literally!) although 18 cars turned up, braving the elements. This is an evening event commencing at 7.00pm. Last year around 60 classic cars and numerous motorcyles attended with many more visitors coming to see them. During the evening a raffle was held and £100 was donated to the Warwickshire and Northamptonshire Air Ambulance. Awards are presented at this event for best models of Rover and non-Rover cars and it would be nice to see as many Rover cars as possible there.

If you wish to join us and would like further details about the event or our regional group, please contact:
Philip Copperwheat on 07766 636652 or Mel Newton (P5 rep.)
